Winter 2017 Anime Overview

OK weebs get your speed reading on lock for subtitles because the winter season of anime is upon us and, let’s face it, we don’t understand Japanese. But honestly, this season of anime is lacking, at least in the opinion of this writer.  Anime is one of the few bastions of media that proposes original creativity to its audience, however, that is not to say that they do not have their own niche clichés, and this season seems to hit a number of these, at least in within my preliminary analysis, which has been conducted by reading synopses and watching the trailer.  Now, this winter is littered with such and such show having a new season along with videogame and manga adaptations, so the usual shenanigans.

Editor's Choices

Fuuka - Dear lord, if you know who Kōji Seo is then you know you’re in for an emotional rollercoaster of epic proportions.  This is the guy had written such romantic novels like Suzuka or Kimi no Iru Machi.  Recognize him now?  Kōji Seo is right under Jun Maeda for the most heart-wrenching yet satisfying love stories of all time.  (That’s right, I’m a sucker for love stories.)  Kurt Vonnegut, one of the most prolific writers of our time, stated as a rule of writing a writer should “be a sadist” to his characters so that the audience can see what these characters can handle.  Well, the likes of Jun Maeda and Kōji Seo have got that shit in the bag, which makes any new material created by them something worth watching.

Acca: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka - An interesting premise, even if I don’t exactly know what the fuck it’s about.  (No subtitles for the trailers.)  However, from what I could gather, it’s about information agencies keeping track of one another within a kingdom split into several states.  I don’t know why, but I got feelings of Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, minus the Helghast wielding MG 42’s.  The setting is somewhat reminiscent of World War I era style of uniforms while set in modern times with modern technology, which is pretty interesting.  In addition, MADHOUSE is the one creating it and they’ve always put out good shit, like Trigun, Paranoia Agent, and One-Punch Man.

Demi-chan wa Kataritai - Got to have some cute shit to off-balance the ballbusters, that one show to put you back into a good mood after watching a whole lot of seriousness and emotional bullshit, that one show per season where you can turn off your brain and enjoy.  This seems to be that show for this season.  It has an interesting premise with not overtly ero and suggestive themes, at least from what can be told initially.  That type of shit is not only an anime cliché, but also just plain exhausting to watch, if you know what I mean.  Also, the addition of a Dullahan as a character is a plus, especially after the references to it by Durarara!!

Honorable mentions: Hand Shakers, Masamune-kun no Revenge, and Youjo Senki for interesting premises and great animation from this one’s preliminary research.

Acca 13 – looks promising. I’m a fan of the character design first of all, secondly I really want to see where this anime goes. Going purely off of promo videos (all in Japanese), teaser trailers, and the opening theme song, I can say I’m excited to follow Jean “The Cigarette Peddler” on his journey through the 13 territories. I honestly can’t tell much from what I’ve seen but I’m hoping for the best. The musical score for the anime alone has me pulled in with it’s jazzy Cowboy Bebop vibes. Also, the animation is via Madhouse studios (One Punch Man, Tri Gun) so you know it’s real.

Fuuka – fml. Be prepared to get your heartstrings plucked and fucked. If this is anything like Kimi no Iru Machi then you’re in for that cringe worthy -- gah dammit just tell her how you feel -- and the -- ah! Fuck this! as your hand slams into a puddle full of tears kinda situation. So I’m super excited for this. I’m ready to feel again.

Youjo Senki -  last but not least. My most anticipated anime to come out this season. The premise seems crazy -- an elite officer who, due to a wrathful god -- is reborn into a little girl who will fuck up you and the set you claim all while commanding her army. And she can fly… SOLD. The animation here looks really solid as well.

Little Witch Academia - I have fallen in love with Trigger studios, the just keep producing amazing quality work; add on to the fact that I really enjoyed both of the OVAs that were created.
I am super excited for this one.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! (season 2) -  I have thoroughly enjoyed both the first season's anime and reading the manga as well (haven't touched the light novel yet.
This series is just full of hilarious scenes definitely on the top of my list.

Demi-chan wa Kataritai/Urara Meirochou - These ones are basically tied for third place mainly because they both are comedy and slice of life based, but also because they look extremely cute and just overall peppy and fun.
These are here because sometimes you just need something to calm you down or just a break in your day something to add some brightness to whatever may be dark in your/my life.... mainly because they look cute as hell!
